Comic writer and artist Liam Sharp

I was once lucky enough to meet comic writer and artist Liam Sharp at an event taking place at the Derby museum a couple of years ago. Though he debuted in the 1980s, I personally have only been following his work since his Wonder Woman days. However, at the exhibition, I was able to see, and admire, pieces of his work throughout his whole career. It was easy to see why DC had hired him to be the artist for Wonder Woman Rebirth, alongside Greg Rucka as writer.

Sharp has a distinct art style, which can only be described as phenomenal. I often have to take my time while looking at his art to take in all the details he puts into his work.  It is obvious Sharp puts in a lot of time and effort into every drawing that he does. As a fan, I appreciate the love he has for his job, because of this I can enjoy both the words and art of the comic as I read.

My favourite work of Sharps is his ‘The brave and the bold: Batman and Wonder Woman’ miniseries, that came out in 2018. With this miniseries, he was able to show not only his art skills but also how well a writer he is.
One of the main reasons I liked this comic so much is because it combined my love of Batman, with Irish myths and legends I was told as a child. It was interesting to see how he brought these characters to life in the DC comic world and how they interacted with already well-established characters. The story he told was engaging throughout all six issues. I was left wanting to see how both Wonder Woman and Batman deal with the situation they were in, with one comfortable around magic and Gods and the other who relies on logic and science to fix the problem.
‘The brave and the bold: Batman and Wonder Woman’ is now on my list of DC comics people must-read.

Not only is Liam Sharp an amazing artist and writer but also, a genuinely nice guy who cares about his fans. At the event held at Derby Museum, he not only spent time signing work but also talking to his fans individually. My friend and I were able to talk to him for a while about his Wonder Woman work and any other questions we had asked.
He regularly interacts with his fans online as well, being active on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. There, he posts pictures of his artwork, advice, updates about any appearances he might be making and other topics.
It is nice to see someone maintain positivity in places where it is very easy to share negativity.

There are many parts of Liam Sharp’s career that I haven’t commented on here. He has not only worked for DC Comics but also Marvel, other independent comic companies, as well as writing his own books.
He has also co-founded a company ‘Madfire’. The Madfire website states,
“Founded in 2011 by Ben Wolstenholme, Liam Sharp and Eugene Walden, Madefire is a technology enabled content company, and creator of the award-winning Madefire App. Madefire provides Creators and Publishers the cutting-edge publishing platform, ‘Motion Book Publisher’, which enables a digital-first approach to publishing cross-platform in multiple formats.” (https://www.madefire.com/)

Liam Sharp is a writer and artist whose work you really should check out. This is something the people of Derby also agree with. On the 14th September 2019, he received a star on the Made in Derby’s Walk of Fame, which can be found outside the Standing Order pub on Iron gate.

He is currently providing the art for ‘The Green Lantern’ alongside writer Grant Morrison. Many of his other works are available online to buy as well as individual pages found here at http://www.albertmoy.com/ArtistGalleryTitles.asp?ArtistId=917&Ti=Liam_Sharp
