NZCA quiz night review
Quiz night –
My Friday nights usually consist of watching the same TV shows while wearing PJ’s and eating junk food. A perfect evening, I hear some of you say, and yes, I definitely agree with that. But I’ve found that going out and supporting the local community centre can be just as enjoyable.
This past Friday I was able to be part of team WonderBat at their quiz night. Though it was just my friend and I on our team, we gave it our best shot.
The night started off with a general knowledge round. The phrases ‘maybe this the answer’ and ‘yeah, could be’ were common responses from team WonderBat throughout the whole quiz, with remembering random facts at the last minute as our saving grace. It’s amazing how much pops into your head when under pressure – did you know Franklin D Roosevelt served four terms as President of the United States? Apparently, I did…somehow…
So with the luck of random facts and guessing correctly, we were in second place after the first round.
The next round is where team WonderBat really shined – Name that Disney song. Finally, my kind of questions! Thanks to my childhood, and the need to still listen to Disney songs on a frequent basis, I was ready to not only name that song but also what film it was from. Though, it probably wasn’t necessary for me to sing along whenever a song was played, no matter how much I wanted to.
But twenty-six songs and forty-eight points later, team WonderBat were in the lead. I was ready to end the night there and take the win, but of course, there were still more rounds to go.
After losing the chance to win a roast chicken dinner, though we did win chocolates and having a small break for food, the quiz started again. This time with a round of family fortune questions. Apparently, team WonderBat does not think like the hundred-people surveyed. Who knew that ‘singing along’ wasn’t even on the board when asked the question, ‘what do people normally do when listening to music’. It was thanks to the boost of points from the Disney round, that we managed to stay in the lead by a couple of points.
Next was another general knowledge round – team WonderBat were ready. Ok, we weren’t ready, but we were slightly more optimistic after the fact we were still in the lead for winning the £30 prize money. It soon became apparent though, after the first question was asked, that maybe there was a (big) chance that we would fall at the last hurdle. But just like the superheroes our team was named after, we didn’t give up. Though maybe not as much logical thought was put into our guesses as they had in previous rounds.
Sadly, team WonderBat didn’t get many points but all in all, we were still one point ahead, with only one round to go.
The money was almost in our hands. All we had to do was keep our one-point lead. However, the last round was about car manufacturers, which would have been wonderful if either member of the team knew how to drive – or anything about cars for that matter. After putting down the very few we did know were right, we quickly tried to remember any car brand we could and add them wherever there was a space, hoping that at least a couple would be right. With that kind of logic, we got a grand total of two points.
It was safe to say team WonderBat did not win the evening, but coming second wasn’t bad either. Though there could have been more there to join in the fun, I had such a brilliant night with all those that had taken part. The volunteers running the event were lovely and a lot of effort had been put in to ensure that the night was enjoyable for all those there. I’m happy that I made myself do something different than my usual Friday night and I look forward to the next fundraiser the Lonny Wilsoncroft community centre put on.
