Review of Liam Sharp’s Starhenge, Book one: The Dragon & The Boar.

Though I can probably be considered a new fan of Liam Sharp, only beginning to follow his work from his Wonder Woman days, I am always excited whenever he brings out a new project. So, when it was announced that Image comics would be publishing a comic he would be the writer and artist on, I couldn’t wait to read it.

Starhenge, Book one: The Dragon & The Boar is described as ‘A time-traveling Merlin is up against killer robots…’ (https://www.sharpy.net/starhenge)
The six-issue story weaves effortlessly between 5th century Britain, the present and a dystopian future, as the characters find themselves dealing with discoveries that change their lives forever.
I particularly enjoyed Sharps’s take on the legend of King Arthur and how the changes he did, made it so the original story and characters, such as Merlin, were still recognisable as they took on different roles to fit into his Sci-fi comic.
There was a good build-up of backstory, not only for the characters but for the plot itself. You could tell that Sharp did his research about ancient Celtic Britain and, I would guess, has an interest in it that comes across in his story.
Each issue revealed more, without giving away too much, even up till the very last page of issue six. Another thing you can tell is, not only does he put a lot of detail into his story but also his artwork. I’m always amazed whenever I see pictures of Liam Sharps’s work when he posts them online and the art in this comic does not disappoint. I would look over pages twice. Once to read and the other to go back and appreciate the artwork and take every detail I could.
This style of storytelling and art definitely keeps the reader hooked and I hope that Starhenge Book 2 will be released in the near future as I can’t wait to find out what happens next.
